WWF Italy was a partner in an ambitious international EU-funded project aimed at linking protected areas in the Alps in order to achieve connectivity between alpine ecosystems. Since knowledge spreading was essential for the project they needed a communication plan to be implemented by the different EU partners.
First of all we worked on identifying the communication targets: general public, local inhabitants, local governments, specialised journalists and researchers. We proposed the production of different media packages and events aimed at the different stakeholders. Even if Econnect was mainly a research project, our aim was to bring the communication part to a higher level compared to the usual communication style of other EU projects. For example regarding the general and local public we designed a storytelling-based approach in order to reinforce the idea of animal migration and environmental corridors.
The ECONNECT project was successfully completed in 2011, clearly showing the importance of ecological corridors in the Alps, and leading to the stopping of a planned building which would have cut an important eco-corridor.
